There is a comedy show in Scotland called Still Game that is hugely popular. The dialect and localised slang can be understood by around 99.9% of Scots yet a few English friends of my wife, who is Finnish by birth, find it impossible to follow. Can it really be so hard as she laughs like a drain when it is on. Admittedly she has been here for a while but is it genuinely so hard to follow for people from other parts of the UK?
